Climate change presents a multitude of risks to human and ecological systems, including:

    • increased frequency and intensity of extreme weather events
      • rising sea levels
        • and disruptions to ecosystems and economies.

These risks manifest as physical damage from events like floods and wildfires, threats to human health, and economic losses

Physical Risks:

  • Extreme Weather Events: Climate change is linked to more frequent and intense heatwaves, droughts, floods, and storms. These events can cause direct damage to infrastructure, disrupt supply chains, and lead to loss of life.
  • Sea Level Rise: Rising sea levels can lead to coastal erosion, flooding, and displacement of communities, particularly in low-lying areas. Changes in Precipitation Patterns: Altered precipitation patterns can result in water scarcity in some regions and flooding in others, impacting agriculture, water supplies, and increasing the risk of wildfires.
  • Wildfires: Climate change is increasing the severity and duration of wildfires, with impacts extending beyond direct losses to include air pollution and damage to ecosystems.
  • Health Risks: Heat-related Illness and Death: Extreme heat can lead to heatstroke, dehydration, and other health problems, especially among vulnerable populations.
  • Disease: Climate change can alter the spread of infectious diseases, including those transmitted by mosquitoes and other vectors, as well as waterborne and foodborne illnesses.
  • Mental Health Impacts: Extreme weather events and displacement can lead to increased rates of anxiety, depression, and other mental health issues.
  • Economic Risks:
  • Damage to Infrastructure: Extreme weather events can damage or destroy critical infrastructure, including transportation networks, power grids, and communication systems.
  • Disrupted Supply Chains: Climate-related disasters can disrupt supply chains, leading to shortages of goods and services and impacting businesses.
  • Reduced Agricultural Productivity: Changes in temperature and precipitation patterns can negatively affect crop yields and livestock production, impacting food security.
  • Increased Costs: Climate change can lead to increased costs for insurance, disaster relief, and infrastructure repairs.
  • Ecological Risks:
  • Loss of Biodiversity: Changes in climate can disrupt ecosystems and lead to shifts in species distribution, putting biodiversity at risk.
  • Ocean Acidification: Increased levels of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere lead to ocean acidification, which can harm marine life, particularly coral reefs.
  • Ecosystem Degradation: Climate change can exacerbate existing environmental problems like deforestation and desertification, leading to further ecosystem degradation
